Spruce Pine BBQ Championship    
 
Think you have what it takes to be a champion? Tired of worrying with the air temperature more than your pit temperature? If so, head for the mountains and throw-down at the 2013 Spruce Pine BBQ Championshipthe coolest event in the Carolinas. The Championship will be held on July 19 & 20, 2013 in Downtown Spruce Pine, North Carolina. We hope you will make plans to join us!
     
The Competition
Competition categories include pork butts, pork ribs, and chicken. Friday evening will feature a Steak Throwdown to be judged by celebrity judges under the supervision of SBN judges. Pork butts, ribs, and chicken entries will be turned-in on the morning of Saturday, July 20. Teams must compete in all three categories to be eligible for Grand or Reserve Grand Champion Awards. Rules & Guidelines
The Spruce Pine BBQ Championship is a Southern BBQ Network (SBN) sanctioned event and will adhere to SBN Contest Rules & Guidelines, along with the Championship’s Local Competition Rules & Guidelines. Click here to view the Official SBN Rules & Guidelines and here to view the Local Competition Rules & Guidelines. A SBN Event Representative will be on-site and will be responsible for the interpretation of and ruling upon all competition-related issues. Decisions made by the SBN Event Representative are final.
 
Entry Fee
The entry fee for The Championship is $150. Returning teams who competed at the inaugural event last year may take a $25 discount. The basic entry fee is for a 25’x30’ cook site with 20 or 30 amp electrical service, public water service, and two pork butts. Some larger cook sites with and 50 amp electrical service will be available for an additional fee on a first come, first serve basis. Click here to view and download a printable version of the Spruce Pine BBQ Championship Entry Form.  If you need a larger space for your equipment, please register early to guarantee the space will be available.
 
Thursday Evening Camping
For those wishing to arrive on Thursday, July 20, overnight camping will be available at no cost at the Parkway Fire Department. Electrical service and water hookups will be available. If you choose to camp on Thursday evening, please do not arrive at the Fire Department site prior to 12 noon on Thursday, July 18. The Parkway Fire Department is located at:

Team Setup
No earlier than 8am on Friday, July 19. Sites will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once setup is complete, team vehicles are required to be removed from the cook area. Reserved parking for cook teams' vehicles will be available nearby. We ask that all vehicles be removed from the cook-site area as soon as possible, but no later than 4pm on Friday, July 19. Again, please note that teams will be not be able to setup prior to 8am on Friday, July 19.
 
Friday Evening Event
Steak Throwdown judged by local "celebrities" under the supervision of SBN. Teams chip in $25 to enter with the the top finisher taking 50% of the pot, second place - 30%, and third place 20%. Prepare your favorite steak recipe, whether it's Chuckwagon or Filet de Boeuf - Country Style or Carne Asada, just serve your favorite and win the pot.  Sign up at the Cook Team's Meeting.
 
Meats
Each team will be provided 2 pork butts. Meat provided must be used for the competition. If it is discovered that a team used any other pork butts than those provided by the sponsor the team will be disqualified.  Cook teams must purchase their own ribs and chicken.  Ribs and chicken inspection will be between 10 am and noon on Friday.
 
 
Note: Due to health department regulations, pets will not be allowed at the festival.
